Sandy Gallis

Hi, I'm Mrs. Gallis and I teach 2nd grade here at North Elementary.  I have been teaching for 9 years and I chose to teach because I love working with children and watching them learn new things.
In my free time I like to read, hike, snow ski, travel, play the piano, and spend time with my family.
My hope is that this web site will be useful to all of the parents.  I will be putting information on here that will include such items as spelling words, newsletters, upcoming events, and more.

Second Grade News
Mrs. Gallis’ Class
August 30, 2010

Dear Parents,

It was good to meet so many of you at Back-to-School night!  The students are settling in nicely to the routine of the school day and I’m enjoying getting to know each of them.  The information that follows is about the various subjects the students are studying, my website that you can access, book orders, and up-coming important dates to know.  Please notice at the bottom of the newsletter that picture day is this Thursday, Sept. 2nd.
Remember that the homework packet comes home every Monday and is due by Thursday.  The students were so good about turning in their homework last week.  I’d love to see all the homework returned every week!

Book Orders are due this Thursday, Sept. 2.

Math
Right now we are reviewing some of the math concepts the students have learned in 1st grade.  So far we have been reading and writing the numbers to 100, identifying right and left, identifying one more and one less than a number, graphing data on a graph, and telling and showing time to the hour.  We have also begun practicing addition facts starting with the doubles with sums to 18.

Reading and Writing
We will be reading a story each week out of the Harcourt books for 2nd grade students.  Along with the story we study vocabulary, genre, authors, illustrators, and comprehension strategies.
We have also been learning and practicing how to Read to Self and Read to Someone.  Ask your child to tell you about it.
The August Home Reading Calendars will be due by Friday, Sept. 3rd.  Please help your child by filling in the amount of minutes he/she reads each day and the titles of the books on the back.
In Writing we are working on a class ABC book.

Science
We are currently studying insects.  The students have been learning that insects have six legs, two antennae, and a head, thorax, and abdomen.

Website
I have a class website on the teacher page on the North Elementary website.  The website address is: http://north.ironk12.org/
Just find the button for faculty at the top of the page and you should be able to find my page.  I’m going to try to update it each week with the spelling words for that week, the latest newsletter, and upcoming important dates.
